Alice Walker is a celebrated writer, poet, and activist and has written seven novels, four collections of short stories, four children’s books, and volumes of essays and poetry. Her work has been translated into more than two dozen languages, and her books have sold more than fifteen million copies. 

Walker made history as the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature and the National Book Award in 1983 for her renowned novel, The Color Purple, which was later adapted into a film and musical.

Walker explores the themes of gender and racial inequality through the civil rights movement, spirituality, and familial archetypes. She emphasizes the humanity in her characters by writing in dialects, using letters for narration, and implementing oral storytelling traditions.
