So this is a fun one. Race Imboden, after failing to qualify for the Individual Event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, switched his coach from Dan Kellner to Sergei Golubitsky. One of the things that Golubitsky seemed to focus on is helping Race fence other left-handers, since Imboden had lost to a good few of them in the Olympic qualifications - losing to Lei Sheng at the 2015 World Championships, Jérémy Cadot at 2015 San Jose World Cup, Jean-Paul Tony Helissey at 2015 Turin Grand Prix, Eduardo Luperi at 2016 Bonn World Cup, and finally to Alaaeldin Abouelkassem at 2016 Havana Grand Prix.

Prior to changing to Golubitsky, Race had never beaten Cassara before. But at Cairo 2016, first event after Rio Olympics, Race beats Cassara 15-8 in the semifinal. But immediately after Cassara would beat Imboden 15-14 at the 2016 Turin Grand Prix and 15-10 at the 2017 Tokyo Prince Takamodo World Cup.

After Cairo, Race had a hard time making past top 8 in general - losing in the top 16 of the 2017 Long Beach Grand Prix, the Top 8 of the 2017 CIP, and the Top 8 of the 2017 Leipzig Individual World Championships. 2018 Anaheim is the first non-Zonal final that Imboden would reach after Cairo 2016.
