Plant Based Pledge | Chris Packham

On World Food Day 2024 I’m asking our environmental NGOs, wildlife and animal charities, zoos, science and nature museums to make a Plant Based Pledge.
To meet our biodiversity targets in the UK, we need land on which to restore nature.
Land that’s predominantly used to raise livestock for meat and dairy.
For nature to increase, we need animal agriculture to decrease.

Livestock farming is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of wildlife.
A plant-based food system would free up land urgently needed for nature restoration.

Reports, reviews and recommendations don’t cut it in a nature crisis- we need bold action and leadership to drive this essential transition, so now it’s up to us, the environmental movement.

Whether it’s cafes, staff restaurants, corporate fundraisers , membership events, board meetings or online shops- I’m proposing a shift to 100% plant-based food.

I’m asking organisations to make this pledge by January 1st 2025, with a clear and published pathway of how to achieve this transition by January 2026.

Avoiding meat and dairy is the single biggest way to reduce our impact on Earth.

Collectively, the environmental sector must be at the forefront of normalising this critical transition and demonstrate positive action for future generations of all species.
