At the INIM 2025 SHIELD Conference, Dr. Kimberly Sullivan and Dr. Rosemary delivered a presentation on the BBRAIN biorepository and its significant contributions to advancing the understanding of Gulf War Illness (GWI).

They examined the various symptoms associated with subjective cognitive decline and the biomarkers linked to veterans’ post-war health challenges. Additionally, they reviewed multiple studies conducted on GWI and its long-term effects.

They explored the correlation between the Everyday Cognition Scale (ECog) and depression, PTSD symptoms, cognitive decline, cytokine levels, and brain volume changes. Their findings highlight that veterans with GWI experience significantly greater cognitive decline compared to Gulf War veteran controls.

Key points:
00:01 Introduction
02:54 What is the BRAIN biorepository?
04:05 Veteran samples and data available
05:38 BBRAIN biorepository key results and accomplishments
07:39 Results from combined BBRAIN biorepository data
08:38 The Pet Neuroinflammation Imaging Study
09:24 The new BBRAIN Study
11:45 Subjective cognitive decline among veterans
13:26 What is subjective cognitive decline?
14:11 Everyday Cognition Scale (ECog) for veterans
15:37 Comparing cases with ECog and demographics

Dr. Kimberly Sullivan is a Research Associate Professor at the Boston University School of Public Health, Department of Environmental Health, and the former Associate Scientific Director for the Congressionally directed Research Advisory Committee (RAC) on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses. She is a behavioral neuroscientist and the Principal Investigator (PI) on the multi-site Gulf War Illness Biorepository Network (BBRAIN) designed to share biospecimens and foster collaboration with other GWI researchers. Dr. Sullivan has worked in the field of aging and behavioral neurotoxicology since 1992 and has also coordinated field studies in neurotoxicology (i.e., pesticides, methylmercury), neurobehavioral outcomes, and the effects of physical stressors and genetic predisposition to disease on cognitive functioning in Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and Parkinson's disease.

Rosemary Toomey is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Boston University and has been a professor at BU since 2000. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Northwestern University in 1985, followed by her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Montana in 1989 and 1992, respectively. Dr. Toomey has been involved in research on neuropsychological functioning since her doctoral dissertation in 1992. While her research initially focused on neuropsychological functioning in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, she expanded her research to include neuropsychological effects of military deployment, PTSD, addiction disorders, and Gulf War Illness. Dr. Toomey also currently trains and supervises graduate students on clinical neuropsychological assessments in her role as the Director of Neuropsychological Assessment at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at BU.
