The name of the village, perhaps already in Roman times, was Portiolo (probably with the meaning of "oil port" or "small port").

We have news of the village of San Terenzo already in the Middle Ages: a village of fishermen and sailors, it was also dedicated to the trade of wine and oil and there was, among other things, a hospital.

According to a legend, the monk Terence (Terenzo in italian) landed there, intending to go to Rome on pilgrimage.
