Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge, developed and published by Ocean Software in 1988.

"Daley is back! .. with a chance for you to tackle his gruelling role in the ten Olympic Decathlon events. This time the gold medal is not enough. You're out to beat the world record and accumulate well over 9000 points, only then will you qualify for the role of World's Greatest Athlete. An exhausting work out in the gym will help you get started, where, under the watchful eye of your coach, you can build up your strength and power to the maximum. Only then will you be in a position to pit your stamina against the record book and, like daley, enter the arena of the all-time greats."

Oceans third licenced Daley Thompson game. This time we get a game that's been developed from the ground up to be a well produced, well presented overall package. This time we have an ending to aim for!

After the title music, the game opens up with three training sessions. Doing well here will earn you energy drinks to utilise in the main game. All the sessions just require some furious joystick waggling action. The events include Sprint, hurdles, javelin, shot put, discus, pole vaulting and high jump. Before each event you are given the choice of shoes. Choose correctly and you'll have an easier time building up the power bar. Choose badly and you'll require more stamina to get the job done. In the spectrum longplay I didn't really do much with this mechanic as it wasnt clear if you got right or wrong, but here the game will let you know if you picked right. You can also consume an energy drink which gives you more power requiring less wiggling. Highly recommended for the final 1800m event.

The only problem I encountered was Pole Vault. The height counter looked bugged so I didn't know what was going on apart from the bar visually being higher. It also wasn't easy to fail either as if you at least hit the launch at full power, you don't need to worry about the angle, at least not until the bar is so high that it defies gravity. So that event went on for way too long and didn't even offer a good amount of points for the time.

Thankfully, the game ends after one round and finally Ocean has given its sports game on the C64 an ending. (Maybe this only shows if getting at least 9000 points, I didn't test)
