STORYLINE:
Dramatic video shot by an AP Television cameraman filmed showed heavy fighting between Islamic insurgents and the UN-backed government troops on the streets of Mogadishu on Sunday
An African Union spokesman said AU peacekeepers in the Somali capital have directly reinforced government troops for the first time as fighting raged between insurgents and government forces for a second day.
An AU official said AU troops were drawn into Sunday's fighting by a direct threat to their positions as the insurgents advanced into north Mogadishu.
The 4,300 peacekeepers generally try to avoid being drawn into the conflict in order to preserve their neutrality.
Their mandate includes the defence of the capital's port, airport and key government buildings.
A local resident said he saw eight bodies and an official from Mogadishu Lifeline and Nationlink Ambulance said 16 people were injured by shelling in residential neighbourhoods.
