NRF-SAEON Celebrates 21 Years of World-Class Environmental Research Platforms for a Sustainable Society.

NRF-SAEON is a sustained, coordinated, responsive and comprehensive in situ South African Environmental Observation Network that is delighted to announce the celebration of its 21st anniversary. During the past two decades, NRF-SAEON has and continues to be committed to advancing knowledge, transforming lives and inspiring a nation through its world-class environmental research platforms.
Climate change is a global environmental challenge facing society today. Our climate zones in South Africa are shifting causing ecosystems and landscapes to change which could disturb the livelihoods of people. NRF-SAEON hosts four terrestrial nodes, 2 marine nodes, one data node and three environmental research infrastructures of the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR). SAEON has been involved in the development of the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas (SARVA), BioEnergy Atlas of South Africa and South African Carbon Sinks Atlas. These provide a wealth of knowledge for local, provincial, and national governments and businesses to identify risks and vulnerabilities and plan for these to better understand the possible impacts of climate change in South Africa.
