A new trailhead project in downtown Wheeling is set to enhance access to the Heritage Trail, with the development of Robrecht Park, also known as the Robrecht Trailhead Project.

Four years in the making, the initiative will transform a 3-acre space in the warehouse district along the trail. The site, previously a brownfield, has been remediated through collaboration between the city, the EPA, and the Department of Highways.

"We had to do some assessment work, we did some wells, we did some monitoring, and now we are ready to begin the actual work that needs done," Wheeling's Economic and Community Development Director Nancy Prager said.

Last week, the Wheeling City Council approved over $470,000 in funding to construction company Cast and Baker for the project, along with a $250,000 EPA grant for earthwork and planting. The first phase, set to begin this spring, will focus on areas closest to the Heritage Walking Trail.
