Chiropractic Adjustment Cures Hiatal Hernia?

I've been asked to comment about a Doctor of Chiropractic in Houston, TX who claims he can cure hiatal hernias with a few days of adjustments. I watched some of his videos and spoke to a former patient who reached out to me after his treatment there. While this patient "loved" how he felt while at the clinic in Houston, the relief didn't last.

I believe this doctor is an excellent chiropractor, so don't get me wrong there.
Here's my problem, actually there are 2 problems:
1. Everyone (at least in the videos I viewed) gets the same series of treatments. There's nothing wrong with them but they are general, mobilization techniques that are not personalized to the individual. They are also a bit aggressive especially for those who may have lax ligaments. We perform chiropractic and physical therapy treatment here at Root Cause. We specialize in personal, individualized care and I am therefore wary of general treatments that are delivered in the same way to each patient.

2. The doctor encourages people to eat whatever they want. I heard him tell a patient to go eat a pepperoni pizza. The patient I met with told me he was encouraged to eat ice cream. The chiropractor says he wants the patients to "test" their stomach and thereby go eat a big, unhealthy meal. He even makes restaurant recommendations on his videos.

In the doctor's defense, the patients' whose videos I saw hadn't been suffering long with their condition. Also, they weren't necessary complaining of GERD or acid reflux. If there is little to no digestive issues occurring, physical treatment on its own can definitely improve the movement of the diaphragm, mid-back, etc. And if that's all that's wrong, then this type of treatment will yield success.

But, and this is a big but - if the patient has extensive digestive issues, then physical treatment alone will not provide anything more than temporary relief.

I know it sounds great to be told that you can eat whatever you want now that your nervous system is functioning more normally, but if there's a digestive component, that relief won't last.

If you are struggling with Hiatal Hernia Syndrome or wondering if that's at the root of your symptoms, consider giving us a call for a consultation. We've been been specializing in this for 15 years, I wrote a book on it, and we offer BOTH internal and physical treatment, personalized to each patient.
