Mumbai Indians announce Suryakumar Yadav as new captain after Hardik Pandya banned from CSK match in IPL 2025.
Suryakumar Yadav will captain Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 opener against CSK, with Hardik Pandya serving a one-match suspension for slow over-rate.
Suryakumar Yadav will lead Mumbai Indians in their first match of IPL 2025 against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 23 (Sunday). Regular captain Hardik Pandya will miss MI's season opener as he was banned for one match for his repeated over-rate offences last year. MI were deemed short of the required over rate in their last match in IPL 2024 against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium. Captain Hardik was also slapped with a 30% fine on his match fee, as it was his third offence last year.
IPL 2025 new rules: Impact players, two balls & saliva use, here's how Indian Premier League changes this year.
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season approaches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday held a meeting of franchises' skippers and referees.
As part of the meeting, held at BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai, several significant rule changes were discussed and approved including lifting of the saliva ban and continuation of the Impact Player rule. As the IPL 2025 season kicks off on March 22, these new rules are expected to bring exciting dynamics to the tournament, yet even change them to an extent.
Saliva ban lifted
One of the most notable changes is the revocation of the ban on the use of saliva to shine the cricket ball. This ban had been imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of health and safety protocols.
Introduction of a second ball
In a bid to address the dew factor that often affects night matches, the BCCI will implement a rule to introduce a second ball in the second innings of evening games.
This new ball will come into play after the 11th over.
Impact Player rule to continue
The IPL will continue to implement the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to substitute one player each during a match, at least till 2027, as already approved by BCCI.
DRS for height and off-side wides
The Decision Review System (DRS) will be expanded to include calls for height wides and wides outside the off-stump.
Rajasthan Royals Name Surprise New Captain For 3 IPL Games, Sanju Samson To Only Play as Batter.
Rajasthan Royals faced a huge blow days before the beginning of IPL 2025. The 18th edition of the cash-rich league is all set to begin from March 22 with Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens. RR will kick-start their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23 but for the first three games, Sanju Samson will not be leading the inaugural champions. Samson is currently recovering from his finger injury and has handed over the captaincy to batter Riyan Parag for the first three matches.
Riyan Parag appointed as Rajasthan Royals captain for first three matches of IPL 2025
Sanju Samson will remain a key contributor with the bat till he gets cleared for wicket-keeping and fielding. He will return as captain once fully fit.
Rajasthan Royals have announced that Riyan Parag will lead the team for the first three matches of IPL 2025.
The young all-rounder will take charge in the opening fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23, followed by home encounters against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on March 30.
Sanju Samson, an integral part of the Royals set-up, will remain a key contributor with the bat till he gets cleared for wicket-keeping and fielding. He will return as captain once fully fit.
Rajasthan Royals’ decision to hand Riyan the captaincy underscores the franchise’s confidence in his leadership,
