A few years after the end of the Civil War, in Abilene, Kansas, a confrontation is brewing between the settlers who are arriving en masse and the cattle ranchers who are being bothered by these newcomers. The local marshal, Dan Mitchell, tries to keep the peace, while the town's sheriff, Bravo Trimble, prefers to avoid any confrontation with the two sides.
