George Orwell writes about his hatred for British Imperialism and ironically, he works as a British imperialist administrator, a subdivisional police officer in Lower Burma, Moulmein.
He hated the violence and the dirty games of the British Raj. He also equally hated the yellow faced Burmans who made his job and the lives of the Europeans impossible. He writes about the bitter anti-European feeling that existed in the streets of Burma.
He narrates some petty actions of the natives that mentally tortured the whites.
He particularly talks about an incident where he was compelled to shoot an elephant on the watch of thousands of natives to prove himself. There were different discussions and opinions among the natives and the White Europeans about the 'shooting of the elephant'. There were several reasons why he had to kill the gigantic animal. But personally, to him, he felt that his true reason was that he did it just not to look like a fool in the eyes of the natives.
