Ekdiltala Paner Haat is the biggest betel leaf market in Rajshahi district. On every Saturday, it sits at Mohanpur Upazila in Rajshahi. Pan or betel leaf (piper betel) is one of major cash crops grown in Rajshahi. Mohanpur and Bagmara upazilas in this district are the only places where sweet betel leaf is grown. Due to favourable climate, the farmers of Rajshahi achieve bumper betel leaf production every year. Pan leaf is usually plucked in Kartik, Phalgun and Ashad. The Kartik pan is considered by consumers to be the best. The betel leaf lovers chew it with shell-lime paste (chun), areca nut (supari) and other flavoured elements. After harvesting, the betel leaf growers of Rajshahi carry most of their crops to the nearby betel leaf markets like Ekdiltala Paner Haat for wholesale marketing. Betel-leaf sold in this market has tremendous demand at home and abroad for its quality and flavor. Many wholesalers and retailers come to this market from different areas to purchase betel leaf. The betel leaf of Ekdiltala Paner Haat is also exported to different countries.
