Lünersee in Vorarlberg: a Hiker's Paradise in the Austrian Alps

Located 1,970 m above see level, Lünersee (natural mountain lake in Vorarlberg, Austria) is simply breathtaking!

The Lünersee is the starting point for many picturesque and thrilling hikes, including ascent to the highest peak and the queen of Rätikon mountains — Schesaplana (2,964 m).

We did a classical trail around the lake which is an ideal hike for families, which is 6 km long. The steepest ascent/descent is situated to the left side of the dam, and the remaining part of the hike is almost on the ground level. In the middle of the hiking trail, there is Alpe Lünersee hut where you can get fresh milk and snacks to pump up some energy. Once a loop hike is completed, Douglas hut has a fully operating restaurant to get a proper meal after your physical challenge.

We stayed overnight at the lake in the Douglas Hut and met sunrise there, after a decent breakfast, our initial plan was to conquer Schesaplana, but due to weather conditions we had to re-route and went to Gafalljoch (2,222m) viewing point, where we became the border crosser, since the national border between Vorarlberg and Switzerland runs through the mountain massif. After enjoying panoramic views on Swiss Alps and Lünersee at the Austrian side we finalized our unforgettable experience.

To get to the lake from the parking at the end of Brandnertal valley you can either hike up, which will take you around 1 hour or take a cable car (return ticket EUR 17,0) which is in operation from May until the end of October.

Lünersee is a special experience, it is place where you let your soul breath and enjoy the divine views!
