As with the 126 CK that took Ferrari into the Turbo era (an era that has re-opened with the new 2014 Formula 1 regulations) this single-seater not only marked a milestone in the history of Ferrari, but also one in the history of racing and motoring in general. This single-seater, which made its début by winning the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1989 driven by Nigel Mansell, was the first to use an electro-hydraulic gearbox designed by Ferrari and developed with Magneti Marelli. This was a revolutionary innovation, because it did away with both the traditional gear lever and the clutch pedal. This meant, as in many cars today that have followed the path set by Ferrari, that all the driver had to do was to operate two paddles behind the steering wheel to upshift or downshift. This leads to out standing advantages regarding both rapid gear changing and safety: there is no need to take the right hand off the steering wheel, and there is no risk of a change in vehicle alignment when opening and closing the clutch. Technically the system is the same as a traditional one, the only difference being that the clutch and gear shift mechanisms are not operated by the driver, but by an electro-hydraulic system. The path set by Ferrari has been copied by all the racing teams, and at present, the entire Ferrari production uses developments of this refined and highly effective gearshifting system.
