Gordon Parks (1912–2006) was an American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer whose career spanned more than five decades. He began his photographic work in the 1930s after purchasing a camera at a pawn shop, quickly gaining recognition for his technical proficiency and visual clarity. His early work with the Farm Security Administration’s Historical Section in the early 1940s documented the social and economic conditions of African Americans during the Great Depression, positioning him among the leading figures in American documentary photography.

In 1948, Parks joined Life magazine, becoming its first African American staff photographer. His assignments covered a wide range of subjects, from fashion and portraiture to racial segregation, crime, and poverty. His photo essays, such as those on the life of Harlem gang leader Red Jackson and the everyday realities of segregation in the American South, combined journalistic precision with a controlled compositional approach. Through this work, he developed a distinct visual method that aligned with documentary realism while incorporating a subtle awareness of narrative sequencing and social context.

Beyond photography, Parks was one of the first Black Americans to direct major Hollywood films, including The Learning Tree (1969) and Shaft (1971). His interdisciplinary career extended into music and literature, reflecting a consistent engagement with social structure, identity, and cultural production. By the late 20th century, his archive encompassed extensive documentation of American life across race, class, and geography, establishing him as a central figure in the visual history of the United States.
