This lineage of this practice comes back to the founding Sakya Masters such as Bari Lotsawa, the sadhana was written down by the Ngorchen Konchog Lhundrub (1497-1557) the tenth abbot of Ngor monastery in Tibet. It was included into the Collection of Sadhanas by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820–1892) – one of the founders of the non-sectarian Rime movement in Tibet.

Jambhala and the syllable “Ja” [ʤa] in the deity name (and his mantra) comes from the Sanskrit version of pronunciation of this deity. Tibetan pronunciation is Dzambhala (Dzambala), starting from the syllable “Dza”. Both Tibetan and Sanskrit versions of pronunciation and spelling are used by Sakya masters and practitioners, but the Sanskrit version is the original one which was brought from India to Tibet.

Also Rinpoche explained the practice of Water Offering to Jambhala.
