Why modern games seem to lack depth

Emergent gameplay, intentional or not, was a big aspect of what made classic fighting games what they are today and why we love them. With the introduction of DLC and digital patches/balance updates, we do gain a steady stream of content for gaming, but at what cost? Do modern fighting games have less depth do to this?
