Machine Learning in Real Life

The last decade has seen extraordinary progress in the field of artificial intelligence. This is mainly due to the advancement in deep learning research and the availability of tools and platforms to train sophisticated neural networks. People interested in machine learning no longer need to be experts in order to create useful applications related to speech recognition, natural language processing, and computer vision.

Training a neural network, however, is just the first step when it comes to building a complete AI solution that will be used by thousands (millions?) of people around the world. In this talk, I will cover some aspects of machine learning that you usually don’t hear about in online tutorials. I will share my experience of having my machine learning algorithms out there in the world.

I will address situations such as:
*What happens when people don’t use your product as expected?
*How can you ensure the output of your model is accurate and relevant?
*How to measure the success of your model when results are subjective?
*Why, sometimes, deep learning is not the answer?

SPEAKER
Dr. Lino Coria is an engineer, educator and researcher working in computer vision applications. He has a Master’s degree from McMaster University and a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Lino has over fifteen years of experience working in both industry and academia.

For over six years, he was a full-time Professor at ITESO University in Guadalajara, Mexico. Additionally, he has taught several courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of British Columbia, Langara College, and CINVESTAV (Mexico).

As an engineer, Lino has developed machine learning solutions that work in multiple environments (cloud, edge and mobile). This experience has allowed him to understand the challenges of machine learning in production. He currently works as a computer vision engineer at Ecoation Innovative Solutions.
