The USS Langley (CV-1) was the United States Navy’s first aircraft carrier, converted from the collier ship USS Jupiter (AC-3). The conversion was completed in 1922, not 1928. Named after aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley, Langley served as an experimental platform for carrier aviation, helping to develop carrier tactics and training the first generation of U.S. naval aviators.

Originally commissioned as a collier in 1913, Jupiter was converted into an aircraft carrier and recommissioned as Langley on March 20, 1922. It featured a full-length flight deck and an open hangar beneath, but due to its slow speed and limited capacity, it was primarily used for training and testing rather than frontline service.

By 1937, Langley was converted again into a seaplane tender (AV-3). It served in this role during World War II until it was severely damaged by Japanese bombers on February 27, 1942. The ship was ultimately scuttled by U.S. destroyers to prevent capture.
