Johann Sebastian Bach's prelude in C is the first piece in the two books of Well-Tempered Clavier published in 1722 and 1724. Bach wrote a prelude and a fugue for each of the 24 keys (12 major, 12 minor), for a total of 48 preludes and fugues. It was not until 1853 that the French composer Charles Gounod improvised upon the first prelude to produce what we know now as "Ave Maria Bach-Gounod."
