Asian Glossy Starling (Aplonis panayensis)
During the late afternoon a flock of Asian Glossy Starling came and landed in top of a large Kapok tree near our house. You might recognize this tree, as it is here I've filmed so many of the birds around our home.

The last part of this video is filmed at approx 70 meter during dusk. I should have filmed it in raw video format to better preserve the color and clarity, but I was plum out of disk space and opted for a lesser quality file. Note to self - by more SSD's.

The Asian Glossy Starling is medium size. Adults are glossy black, sexes alike. Adult all black with green shimmer. Imm upper parts brownish black glossed with green: underparts white streaked with black on face and throat. Bill and legs are black. Eye blood red.

Length 202 (8"); Wing length 193 Male, 96 female, Tail 62, Bill 24

Habitat: Resident in cities, parks, gardens, coconut plantations, mangroves, second growth and forest edge, in the lowlands up to 700 meter but not higher.

Food and feeding: Diet is varied - fruits and nectar, insects, spiders (Araneae), and snails (Hemiplecta). Figs, Mango, Bananas, Papaya. Berries and nuts. It will eat fallen fruits, grasshoppers on the ground and catch insects in the air.

Breeding season lasts from February to June

Voice: Call is load seeup interspersed with metallic notes chank and chillansh.

Flight: The Asian Glossy Starling performs direct and fast flight, usually at treetop level.

Status and conservation:
Not globally threatened. Widespread, and common. Here in the Philippines it is being hunted or trapped for food. (Here around our place we have instructed our security guards to stop anyone from hunting and trapping any animal or birds - so here more and more birds and animals are thriving).

Range: Eastern India, Singapore, SE Asia, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Borneo, and the Philippines. There is only 1 species found here in the Philippines.
