The second electric SUV to go on sale in Australia wearing the illustrious three-pointed star is the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250, priced at $76,800 before on-road costs.

There is also an Edition 1 variant available from launch, priced $7300 higher at $84,100 plus ORCs.

Both models are based on the Mercedes-Benz GLA small SUV and both variants are powered by the same asynchronous electric motor that delivers 140kW and 375Nm to the front wheels through a single-speed reduction gear.

A lithium-ion battery under the floor is rated at 66.5kWh for a range of 426km (WLTP) or 480km (ADR), and according to the same standard the EQA 250 draws 16.2kWh from the battery while driving.

The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 can be recharged by a number of different means – DC fast-charging, an AC wallbox in the garage, or the standard 10A household power outlet.

Mercedes-Benz claims that a DC charger can recharge the EQA from 10 to 80 per cent of battery capacity in around 30 minutes, and a wallbox can recharge from 0 to 100 per cent in less than six hours. Charging from a standard 10A outlet will take much longer again.

As standard, the EQA 250 will be sold in Australia with 19-inch wheels, heated and electrically-adjustable front seats and leather sports steering wheel. The company’s MBUX infotainment system runs through a 10.25-inch touch-screen and incorporates voice control, digital radio, satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto facilities.

For the Edition 1 variant, the wheels are upgraded to 20-inch alloys in a matt copper finish. Leather upholstery replaces the standard Artico trim, and the launch model also features additional AMG exterior and interior details.

Safety features for both models consist of a Driver Assistance Package (including but not limited to active cruise control, route-based speed adaptation, lane keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring), traffic sign recognition, automated parking with reversing camera, and nine airbags.
