Honshu Island is the largest island in the Japanese archipelago. Tokyo was built on its largest plain, the Kanto Plain.

Tokyo is at 35 degrees north, close in latitude to Algeria in Africa and Atlanta in the Americas.

At the center of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace. Originally called Edo Castle, the Imperial Palace has been the base of the Kanto Plain for more than 500 years.

To the north of the Yamanote Line, flows the Arakawa River, and to the south, the Tamagawa River. The area between these two rivers and Tokyo Bay is called Toshin, or Central Tokyo.
山手線の北には荒川が流れて、南には多摩川が流れます。この２つの河川と、東京湾に挟まれた地域を、都心(としん)と呼びます。
