Reef health update – 11 March 2021

Australian Institute of Marine Science in-water temperature loggers at a subset of reefs across the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park indicate temperatures are currently below bleaching thresholds.

Sea surface temperatures are mostly close to the long-term monthly average, except some inshore and mid-shelf areas in the southern Reef that remain slightly above average.

It is likely to be drier than average across the northern tropics during March, with no significant shift towards wet or dry conditions for the remainder of autumn.

James Cook University researchers and Parks Australia staff recently completed a 24-day voyage surveying reefs in the Coral Sea Marine Park to assess the health of coral and reef fish communities. Results are due to be released in late April following analysis.

The Reef Joint Field Management Program vessel, the Reef Ranger, is out this week at Low Isles doing mooring maintenance.
