Jacob Wrestles with God – Genesis 32
After many years away from home, Jacob decided to return to Canaan. But he was afraid because his brother Esau, whom he had deceived long ago, was coming to meet him with 400 men. Jacob prayed to God for protection and sent gifts ahead to Esau as a peace offering.
That night, Jacob stayed alone by the river Jabbok. Suddenly, a man appeared and wrestled with him until daybreak. They struggled all night, and when the man saw he could not overpower Jacob, he touched Jacob’s hip and dislocated it. Still, Jacob refused to let go and said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
The man asked, “What is your name?” Jacob answered, “Jacob.” The man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”
Then the man blessed him. Jacob realized he had wrestled with God Himself and named the place Peniel, meaning “Face of God,” saying, “I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is spared.”
When the sun rose, Jacob limped away, forever changed.
