Vernon, Indiana is one of only two "towns" in the State of Indiana to have a Mayor. Cities are classified differently than towns in Indiana and since Vernon became a "town" before the State of Indiana became a "State", Vernon falls under a separate classification. Vernon was founded in 1815 which was actually 2 years before Jennings County became a county! Vernon is the county seat, the smallest county seat in the state of Indiana and one of the smallest county seats in the United States with only 323 people in 2018. The entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places. The first railroad in Indiana ran from Madison to Vernon in 1841. You can also find a small tunnel at the end of Pike Street near Gains Street that is the first elevated railroad overpass/tunnel west of the Alleghenies. The first all woman jury in the state was here in Vernon in 1921 and is believed to be the second all woman jury in the United States. The first public playground in the State of Indiana is also located in Vernon.
