Streaming music has now taken over the music industry. Platforms like Spotify and Apple Music provide us with access to vast music archives. Before they became the standard, you had to buy individual albums or listen to the radio for new songs. Today, there has never been a better time to discover new kinds of music.
So, how has this affected Gen Z's musical preferences? When I ask someone what sort of music they like, they always say? "I don't know, I listen to a little bit of everything." According to a recent study, 97 percent of Gen Zs listen to at least five different types of music on a regular basis.
Artists have taken notice of this and have adjusted their offerings to meet demand. Ed Sheeran, for example, has songs in dance, pop, folk-pop, and even soft rock. Drake, for example, is a rapper with multiple R&B successes. Kanye West, for example, is a hip-hop and rap artist.
However, other singers have made significant changes to their musical genres, such as Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, who both shifted from country to pop. Other musicians have attempted to break into the Latin market by performing a verse or a whole song in the Spanish language. Artists like Justin Bieber, Drake, and Beyonce, have done so.
Audiences appear to enjoy it when their favorite musician ventures outside of their comfort zone to create new forms of music; they gush about it on social media, and their content becomes viral as a result.
Old Town Road by Lil Nas X is a great example of a viral song that made someone famous. Rap, trap, and country were all used in this song. Nothing like this has ever been seen before.
Since the 1920s, each decade has been defined by a musical genre fueled by audience desire. Artists have long attempted to please their audiences by providing them with material that they desire to hear.
Looking back at this decade, 30 years from now, what will we call this age of music? Do you think artists should stick to a niche genre or do they need to branch out and be a jack of all trades? Let us know in the comments below.
