The first words you utter in a foreign language will naturally give off an impression of your overall ability as a speaker. How do you sound? Are you using one-word or generally short answers to common questions? Well, it may not fully represent all your hard work with this language. In fact, moving from beginner to intermediate or advanced levels is sometimes a question of stringing more words together, pausing less often, and using pronunciation to show similar habits to that of a native speaker.
This talk invites you explore short idiomatic phrases (bursting with grammatical complexity and pronunciation challenges) that can be added to just about any context to help you build confidence when speaking! These “mini scripts” are designed to add regional flair and help connect ideas, using the most common and colloquial word chunks. I’ll also invite you to submit your own so we can all try them out together. You’ll see these “nothing” sentences have a lot of meaning.

With a natural ear for accents and a background in academic linguistics, Ruben Adery has built a process to understand, break down, and simplify phonetics and fast-track language acquisition in five languages and counting. Locals frequently mistake him for a native of Argentina, Israel, and Brazil among other places, and he can tell you first-hand of the many benefits of precise pronunciation. Ruben has taught and coached language learners, teachers, and performers in 50+ countries for over 15 years, using each student’s native linguistic patterns and enjoyable exercises to achieve memorable and fluent pronunciation in target dialects.
