LG Chem, which supplies EV batteries for Tesla, said it's going to boost battery capacity and has been working on a “new form-factor” cylindrical batteries which will boost energy density five-fold and power by six-fold, without elaborating.

Thus, the EV battery maker LG Chem plans to triple production capacity for cylindrical batteries used by Tesla and others, and is considering expansion in Europe and North America to meet surging demand, it said today on October 21, 2020, while announcing sales and operating profits in Q3.

"The Battery company recorded the highest sales and operating profits ever in a quarter with sales of 3.1439 trillion KRW and operating profits of 168.8 billion KRW. The launch of a new model of the electric automobile by major European clients, an increase in sales of cylindrical batteries and an expanded supply of IT products, etc. made it possible to achieve the highest performance ever," reads the release.

LG Chem also says "in Q4, it is predicted that sales will grow and profitability will improve through an expanded supply of automobile batteries and cylindrical batteries for electric automobiles."

LG Chem, along with CATL, supplies batteries for Tesla’s made-in-China models, while Panasonic makes batteries for Tesla’s U.S-made cars.

Regarding LG Chem's new form batteries, which have five-fold dencity and six-fold power, Reuters says these are similar to targets that Tesla announced last month for its new batteries to be made in-house, called 4680 cells, to enable a 16% increase in range for Tesla vehicles.
