The W.E. Brew Grand Cru 2020 started as Barley Beast, a face-ripping barley wine packing over 100 IBUs and heavy malt flavor. We loved it, but also thought it might have potential to turn into something special. To tame the beast, we decided to age it in three freshly-emptied bourbon barrels. But it takes more than simple barrel-aging to earn the 'Grand Cru' designation. After six months of aging we added a special ingredient, wood spirals from the Brazilian Amburana tree, into each barrel. The final result is a beer of extraordinary depth with a sturdy hop presence and layers of dark malt, vanilla, oak, and spice.
