The town of Vulcan wasn’t named after a planet. It was founded in 1913 by a CPR surveyor who had a fondness for Roman Mythology and named the town after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.

Capitalizing on the name coincidence, the Town of Vulcan had a replica built of the Starship Enterprise in 1995 and placed next to the highway. The Starship Enterprise was the name of the space ship used in the 1960s TV Series called Star Trek

Vulcan followed that up with a Trek Station (1998) that also serves as its tourism centre.

The bold move paid off. The town has become recognized as a world renowned tourist attraction for trekkies. (Trekkie: fan of the Star Trek TV series).

There are tributes to Star Trek all over town from murals, to street lights to business names.

In June, the town hosts Spock Days. Trekkies from points afar journey here and dress up as their favourite character and join in a parade.

Each year, in July, the town of Vulcan hosts a star-trek convention called Vul-con. This year marks it’s 30th anniversary.
