The Rajya Sabha has passed agricultural bills in this monsoon session of the Rajya Sabha 2020. Will these acts help small and marginal farmers get better prices for their produce? Why has it triggered farmers protests in some parts of India? BOOM Explains.

Dr. Ashok Gulati, Infosys Chair Professor for Agriculture, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) says introduction of this act is like the time when the milk co-operatives were created. Over the years, our policy has been very focused on production and not enough attention was paid to marketing the produce. As a result, laws on marketing were very restrictive during 1950-60's, causing a shortage of produce. The changes in this system were overdue.
