The Supreme Court has warned that every acquittal of a real culprit is a blot on the justice system. It said the principle of “proof beyond reasonable doubt” must not be misused by exaggerating minor contradictions in evidence. The Court overturned a Patna High Court verdict that had acquitted a man convicted under POCSO for raping a minor, calling the reasons unsustainable. It stressed that while no innocent should be punished, guilty offenders must also not walk free by exploiting technical loopholes.
