Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is a song by Metallica from their third album Master of Puppets, released in 1986 and which is widely considered one of the best and most influential metal albums of all time. The song is about a person who is trapped in a mental institution and wants to escape from the oppression and abuse they face there. The song was inspired by the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, starring Jack Nicholson as a rebellious mental patient. The title of the song also refers to a sanitarium, which is a type of hospital where patients can leave at their own free will, but are afraid to do so because of the outside world.

One anecdote about the band is that they recorded Master of Puppets in Denmark during the winter, and they hardly saw any daylight for the whole time. They would start working around 7 p.m. and finish around 4-6 a.m., when it was still dark outside. Drummer Lars Ulrich, who is from Denmark, said that his main recollection of the recording sessions was "just how dark it was!"

The song has a complex time signature, changing from 10/4 to 4/4 to 10/8 and back to 4/4. With this song, it was the first time Metallica ever allowed their music to be used in a movie or soundtrack, when it was featured in the HBO documentary Paradise Lost: The Murder At Robin Hood Hills, about the wrongful conviction of three teenagers for the murder of three boys in Arkansas.

The song is often played live by Metallica, and has been performed 986 times as of June 2023.
