The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed the Police Act Amendment Bill to enable a person appointed to the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment.
The Executive bill forwarded to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu in a letter to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was first presented for first reading, then scaled second reading and was read the third time and passed.
Senate leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidel, leads the debate on the general principles of the bill aimed at amending the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which seeks to increase the retirement age of police officers from 60 to 65 years and their tenure of service from 35 to 40 years.
The controversy about the tenure of IGP didn’t start with the current police boss, Egbetokun, his predecessor, Usman Baba, was not in any way different.
