Led Zeppelin’s “What is and What Should Never Be” - Guitar Lesson [Guitar Solo and Song Breakdown]

In this episode, I share my reaction and joy of breaking down this beautiful song. What is and
What Should Never Be appears on Led Zeppelin II released in 1969. The track epitomizes the name “Led Zeppelin”: i.e. Lightness and heaviness in the same song. This duality is a recurring texture in Jimmy Page’s writing and is fully realized two albums later with the iconic track: Stairway to Heaven.

For this video, I share classical and compositional insights (oblique motion, binary structures, harmonic progression, etc.) found in this track. I’ll demonstrate the highlights of these elements for you and conclude by joyfully playing the slide guitar solo unaccompanied. This is not so much a teaching video as much as it is a ringside seat watching me react and share my love for what I’ve learned in revisiting this track.
