The Duke Blue Devils came into the 1991-92 season ranked No. 1, and they would end the season ranked No. 1. One of their victims during that run was their hated rival, the Tar Heels. UNC came into the ACC Championship game as a Top 20 ranked team and were one of only two teams to beat Duke that season, but the Blue Devils got their second taste of revenge in a week with a dominant 94-74 win.

Christian Laettner had a huge game for Duke, dropping 25 points (including five threes) to go along with 10 rebounds and seven steals. Grant Hill had 20 points of his own and Bobby Hurley chipped in 11. Laettner's 3-game averages of 24.3 points and 10.3 rebounds earned him Tournament MVP honors. The win gave Mike Krzyzewski his 3rd ACC tourney title and Duke to their first ACC Tournament Championship since 1988.
