“We have the latest numbers from AP Votecast. We're looking at Republicans voting in the Iowa caucuses. Our first chance to see what these voters are thinking as we start the presidential contest that goes through November. One big headline stands out: 4 in 10 said immigration is their top issue. And what is it that they want? Well, nearly three quarters said that they believe immigrants do more to hurt the country than help the country, which suggests they want to restrict the total number of immigrants. The economy came in second. Nearly a third said the economy was the top issue. But despite the high inflation, many households still feel as though they're doing okay. Nearly two thirds said their personal finances are holding steady or improving. However, there is one thing they want to see from their nominee if that nominee wins the presidency, that is a major overhaul of how the U.S. government operates. 3 in 10 said they want a complete upheaval of the US government, and 6 in 10 said they wanted substantial changes. Now, this has overlapped with a loss of confidence in the institutions of the US government, such as the legal system and even elections - events that are tied to former President Trump.”

STORYLINE:
Iowa Republicans are headed to their state’s caucuses on Monday with a greater desire to focus on immigration than address the health of the U.S. economy.
 
It’s a possible sign that cultural battles might be eclipsing pocketbook issues as a motivator.
 
The finding comes from AP VoteCast, in a survey of more than 1,500 voters who are set to attend the leadoff caucuses across Iowa on Monday night.
 
Associated Press reporter Josh Boak says about 4 in 10 GOP caucusgoers chose immigration as the most important issue facing the country, according to AP VoteCast.
 
“One big headline stands out: 4 in 10 said immigration is their top issue. And what is it that they want? Well, nearly three quarters said that they believe immigrants do more to hurt the country than help the country, which suggests they want to restrict the total number of immigrants,” Boak said.
 
However, about one-third said the economy was a focus, while fewer people named other priorities, including foreign policy, health care, abortion or energy.
 
Many in the survey are expressing skepticism about the government’s legal system and the integrity of U.S. elections.
 
“However, there is one thing they want to see from their nominee if that nominee wins the presidency, that is a major overhaul of how the U.S. government operates. 3 in 10 said they want a complete upheaval of the US government, and 6 in 10 said they wanted substantial changes,” Boak said.
 
The survey is conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
