Felco tools have been described as the gold standard of pruning and industrial tools. Their cable cutters are exceptionally high quality, but are they worth the price? DirtFarmerJay puts them to the test.

I have a confession to make. I didn’t know that Felco made other products beyond pruners and loppers. In fact, this Swiss company manufactures a range of high-quality tools, including pruning shears, pull-stroke pruning saws, gardening hand tools, grafting and pruning knives, battery-powered tools, and cable cutters.
I became aware of the cable cutters after one of our viewers wrote to ask us to review the Felco cable cutters and share our recommendations. This led to a conversation with Felco, who generously provided us with a C7 and CDO cable cutter.
Felco® makes several cable cutters. Many are for specialized use in manufacturing and industrial settings. The C7 and CDO are very nice tools that will serve well for home, ranch, farm, and maker settings.
These tools commonly create flying debris as the material is severed. This is especially true when a small piece is being cut off. Therefore, wearing eye protection is highly recommended, and gloves are also a good idea.
These cutters come packaged with a specification card that includes instructions on how to service the tool.
The C7 features a triangular cutting action that prevents the item being cut from being squashed. Handy!
Depending on the material being cut and its hardness, this cutter cuts material from 2.5 mm to 7 mm. The harder the material, the smaller the cutting capacity.
These cutters feature red-coated handles, which are wide for my size hands, but as the cutter is engaged, the handles come together and provide the needed leverage.
The C7 is about $60.
The CDO is slightly larger (about 20 cm /7-¾” long) and gives more leverage. While the C7 cuts at the tip/front of the tool, the CDO cuts from the side. The cutting diameter ranges from 0.2 mm to 5 mm.
The tool is black, so it lacks the high visibility of the C7. Even so, I would pay the $80 for the CDO over the C7. They are both great tools, but I like the increased leverage of the CDO. I found that it cut fencing, including barbed wire, quite easily.
One disadvantage of the CDO is that it requires more clearance to access the material being cut, as the cutter is positioned on the side of the tool's nose. The C7 has the cutter at the tip of the tool, so less room is needed.
I also appreciate that these tools are highly serviceable - every part is replaceable. You may not use cable cutters every day, but when they are needed, these tools will reliably do the job. The Swiss are renowned for quality, which is evident in these Swiss-made tools. You can check them out at:

These are lifetime tools that will serve you well. Don’t waste your money on “knock-off” tools that may be less expensive, but can’t do the job as well as the Felco® models can.
JUST DO IT YOURSELF!
