Far up the east coast of Greenland at the mouth of Scoresby Sound, the world's largest fjord system, lies the small town of Ittoqortoormiit.

It is about as isolated, remote and difficult to access as possible.

And yet shortly ago on the 17th of August 2025 it had been here for a Century.

Ittoqortoormiit was established 17th of August 1925 under the Danish name Scoresbysund named after the fjord system discovered by English explorer William Scoresby.

The area had been explored early as the outpouring of the waters of the fjord made it more accesible than much of the Greenlandic East coast, which is locked behind the iceflow of the Arctic sea going south.

This ment that the fjord system could be reached 2 to 3 months a year making it possible to supply a colony here.
