Join me as I set out on a hike to explore a cave in Jackson County, Alabama, tucked away in a massive, dry streambed. The entrance was impossible to miss, as the large opening sat directly along the rocky path of the streambed, inviting me in. At just under 400 feet long, I knew this would be a relatively easy cave to check out solo. Of course, I took the necessary precautions, ensuring I had a call-out who knew my exact location and expected exit time.

I spent about 45 minutes exploring this hidden gem, and it did not disappoint. Inside, I discovered some surprisingly intricate flowstone formations, their smooth, rippling surfaces shaped by centuries of slow mineral deposits. One of the most intriguing finds was an area marked with deep claw scratches—believed to be from a bear. These ancient markings could be several hundred or even thousands of years old, offering a haunting glimpse into the cave’s past.

It was a short but fascinating adventure, a perfect reminder of the hidden wonders waiting to be discovered in Alabama’s backcountry. On the way out to the cave and on the way back I also explored the streambed a bit looking for fossils or anything else interesting. On the way out, I discovered what is believed to be a very old horse tooth!
