The Chargers, always a good team, with a very good passing offense and the rest in fluctuations over the year. With bad luck on Turnovers, fumble recoveries and such.
The 2014 Ravens though, were special. Because Kubiak came to town, fresh off heart attacks and losing his head coaching job at the collapse of the Texans, which was really the collapse of Matt Shaub followed by a decline in all offensive talent...Its not like his successor Bill O Brien did much better until Deshaun Watson was drafted.
Kubiak is the man who ran the Shanahan offense nuts and bolts in Denver as Offensive coordinator under Shanahan and carried on the legacy to Houston. For a little while that was the only place. Now in 2019 the Shanahan Kubiak school has Kyle, McVay and a whole coaching tree. This is the Outside Zone Rushing offense melded perfectly into a Passing offense that uses West Coast Walsh Terminology but is a specific flavor of it. (Andy Reid/Gruden are different flavors, yet same Walsh language/mentors).
Kubiak/Shanahan school depends on Outside Zone as the base run play. What makes it special is the play action portion of the playbook. The Play Action in this offense DEADLY because the outside zone bootleg puts the QB so far from the defense that has to follow the blockers on Outside Zone the other direction. A LOT of time for WRs to get open and for even average QBs to hit big plays each time. The Defense is stretched the width of the field, even if the TE and receivers are covered the QB can run for 10+ yards. More if its John Elway 95-98, RG3 2012 running this offense under Kyle Shanahan.
Sean mcVay Rams offense who everyone called a genius in 2017-18 is really just one derivative of the Shanahan school, so are many other 'hot' offensive coordinators. It's not a knock on McVay, to have been brought up on a philosophy with 23 years now of proven effectiveness. Its that long since Shanahan and Kubiak came to Denver and in 1996 became the #1 seed off that offense, then won it all in 97 and 98. Sure Elway and Terrell Davis are Hall of Famers but the offense scheme put them both in the Hall; it was PERFECT for those 2.
LOOK what Kubiak did in a year in Baltimore. The 2014 Ravens had the best offense in the Flacco/Harbough era scoring 405 points. They SHOULD have gone to the Superbowl that year if the Defense hadn't been declining all the way to 8th place in 2014. Defense wins championships, in EVERY postseason the better defenses nearly ALWAYS prevail over the top offenses. ((Except the 2006 Colts over the #1 Defense Bears!!))
They lost to the Patriots off a WR drop in the endzone, and 2 trick plays by the Patriots offense, but the stacked with talent 2000's to 2011 Ravens Defense would NOT have allowed 35 points to the Patriots. ALSO: The 2014 Patriots D finished #1 in the final 7 games they only allowed SIXTEEN points per game, their ranking is skewed by a collapse against the Chiefs in week 4, allowing 41 points and Patriots only scoring 14 garbage time points in the 4th.
So that's Kubiak, he made Flacco and the Ravens score 31 points against the best coached Patriots Defense, which eventually won the Superbowl. Kubiak finally got his ring in 2014 with zombie Peyton Manning, and the awful Brock Osweiller, who stole 20 million $ from the Texans, who PAID 2nd round pick to Browns to get the cap space back...proving just how inferior Bill O Brien is as an offensive coach and teacher. Brock was effective enough with Kubiak to look effective enough for 20 mill annually. The Ravens totally fucked up in 2015 by NOT continuing the offense with a Shanahan/Kubiak disciple of the offense. The offense makes good QBs like Matt Ryan into superstars and gives average QBs their best seasons.
This game is a thriller and needs a comeback to go to OT. Enjoy greatness from 2014, 5 Years ago. Appreciate the Schemes folks. Whether 2014 or 2019; They have history. The Best passing offenses aren't totally new creations; they're modifications on what has already shredded defenses.
