While this answer can vary slightly depending on who you ask, the most accepted answer is that it’s any color containing some element of brown, or colors that are associated in tandem with plants and soil. This creates a subconscious homely and inviting feeling that puts any onlooker at ease with their surroundings.

These colors will also often be in either saturated or neutral based color tones. This means that they’ll be a bit more muted and flat.

As far as what hues will make up an earth tone’s color palette, the most obvious ones are straight brown and tan in shades of umber, ochre, and sienna, but they can also be variations of blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink and purple. These colors will often be richer and more somber during the fall and winter seasons and carry a more pastel and lively tone in the spring and summer. The greatest strength of this color palette is that it’s incredibly versatile with the number of different ways you can bring flashes of color into your outfit, and it can give off a more casual feel than the more industrial grays and blacks that are found in most men’s wardrobes.
