There were two active lighthouses at Inishowen Head which guided vessels into Lough Foyle and to keep them clear of the Tuns Bank (a spit of sand lying to the north east of Macgilligan's Point).

The towers designed by Mr Halpin and built by James Pettigrew of Dublin, along with Keeper's dwellings, were started in 1835 and completed in 1837. They were 49 feet (15m) high and their lights were 67 feet (20.4m) above high water.

Having two lights was never successful so by 1871 the west tower was raised by 25 feet (7.6m) and shortly after the east tower’s use was discontinued.

The lighthouse was automated in 1979.
