In manufacturing, companies have clear systems, metrics, processes and standards for defective products. Defects are identified and collected in a reject bin. Those defective products are evaluated to determine whether there are problems to address.

When problems arise, root cause analysis is conducted to identify the issues. And then a team sets to work to understand the cause and develop process changes to eliminate the issues and prevent recurrence.

If certain percentages of defects/total products are hit, often a line is shut down to investigate.

Compare that to how manufacturing marketing metrics are tracked. Typically vanity metrics like website visitors and lead numbers are celebrated without ever considering the defect rate. In website visitors, for instance, the defect rate will often be over 90% (bounce rates.)

Simply changing the way we think of marketing metrics and sales KPIs gives us the opportunity to improve by applying a version of the mindset from production to our revenue growth.

If we shift the way we report and analyze marketing metrics to reflect an understanding of ORE™ (Overall Revenue Effectiveness™ Framework) where our revenue output is the product of the efficiency at each step, then small incremental improvements in each step can lead to enormous net improvements in revenue and profit - in addition to more accurate sales forecasts.
