When you take any pill, whether that be birth control or an anti-depressant or just ibuprofen, what happens to it? Unfortunately, nothing; the compound(s) within the pills that we take are unchanged and end up in our water supply, where they cause various negative effects in the environment. Almost every pharmaceutical pill that we take has been designed to go through our bodies (and as a result, the water treatment plants) without being broken down. The solution? Chemistry: chemists can chemically change the pharmaceutical after it leaves the body and allow it to naturally decompose in the environment into small, inert molecules. Jacob Levin is a Double Major in Chemistry and Music at Lake Forest College. He is the concertmaster of the Lake Forest College Chamber Orchestra and the Secretary of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS). His future plans are to pursue a PhD in Organic Chemistry and eventually teach Chemistry at the university level.
