"Apollo 11" (Extreme Demon) by nasgubb | Geometry Dash 2.11

I remember when I saw the first preview of Apollo 11, nasgubb's upcoming level, at the start of 2021. He revealed that it'd be 3 minutes and 40 seconds long, and considering his recent creating pace, I figured it'd take a long time. Nevertheless, I saw the previews on his Twitter profile and checked in on his streams every now and then. Of course I'd be hyped for a new nasgubb drop after so long. Aside from some collaborations, his last level, Paperworld by TamaN, came out after 2 years ago. I wouldn't call it a "true" solo level due to being a pretty faithful remake.

This is a sequel to Saturn V, a level nasgubb released in June 2017, which was right at the start of 2.1. I still remember it very well due to how good it was. It looked very good, featuring some great block designs, nice color usage, and simple but cool effects. The gameplay was also very fun, and it's sitting at a Medium Demon rating right now. The sequel is a step-up in many ways. It's over double as long, and I'd say it looks even better visually as a whole. Just like the prequel, the block designs, colors, and effects are all great, but I'd say this is even cleaner. Each part lasts a bit longer, but it never gets boring to me because of how nicely nasgubb decorated everything. As mentioned, there's the colors and effects, which are perfectly synchronized to the song. Pretty much every part mixes several colors and changes them frequently with pulses.

My favorite parts in terms of colors are probably the ones that mix in subtle rainbow colors, for example at 1:47 and 3:23. As for effects, there's multiple ones throughout the level, but the coolest are probably at 0:45 and 2:32 in my opinion. These examples also feature the white block design, which can be seen mixed in throughout the level. I like how nasgubb mixed 2 different block designs in several parts like this. These white blocks are obviously supposed to represent the moon, which ties in nicely to the level's theme and name. As a result, I'd say this is also a step-up thematically compared to its prequel. I really like the little icons from 3:21 towards the end too, referencing how Apollo 11 was the first spaceflight that took humans on the Moon. It's a cute detail to end off an extremely cool level.

Obviously, you may be able to tell that this is also much harder than its prequel. That was a Medium Demon, while this will be an Extreme Demon. It's a bit on the easier end, but it will still be nasgubb's hardest level by far. Floppy verified the level and recorded this video, so special thanks to him for providing the footage as always. He found it very enjoyable. Hopefully other people who give this a shot agree with that. All in all, I can't see this getting anything but an Epic Extreme Demon rating. I've been a huge fan of nasgubb's works for so many years, and seeing another solo level by him is always a treat. This is no different. For how long it is, I think it's a masterpiece in design style, at least visually.
