As Laney walked along the trail, she probed deeper into the local patch of woods. She had her two dogs with her so she wasn’t too concerned about entering the stand of timber as it always brought her peace and a sense of ease when she went there. She was enjoying the walk when her dogs began barking and acting upset. She glanced up and looked into the eyes of a female black bear and her two yearling cubs coming straight at her.
Justin Rangel was Laneys boyfriend and was working a bit later than normal. He arrived at their home they shared about 8:30 in the evening and found their two dogs standing around out in front of the house. This was a strange scene to him and was not ordinary to find them this way. He knew that Laney would usually take the dogs for a walk, but she would always put them back in the yard and take their leashes off. After searching the house, he knew he had to find her immediately.
Justin quickly headed to the area he thought she may have gone, the private trails near the Bible Camp. As he searched on the paths and tried to find her, he came across a lump in the duff that didn’t look right. As he approached the mysterious lump he could see legs sticking out. He soon realized he had discovered Laney’s battered and bruised body covered in leaves and plant debris and dirt. He immediately called the authorities and requested they come to check this situation out.

Leah laid out her bedroll in her tent, near another pair of tent campers, Joe and Kim Cole, between the sheds behind the post office. After the evening winds down the campers make their way to their tents and curl up for a good night's rest.
At around 3 AM Leah is asleep in her tent when she is awakened by the loud huff of a bear on her head through her tent. She yells the alarm, “bear, bear”. The Coles also heard the bear approaching and peek out of their tent, but the bear was gone. Leah exits her tent and moves a big bag of lentils and a couple bags of snack food into the old jail building about 25 feet away. The Coles asked her if she wanted to go to the motel and sleep but she declined. Then she takes her Frontiersman Bear Spray and curls up in her sleeping bag in her tent, and goes back to sleep.
At 4:05 AM Mr. Cole is awoken by the sounds of the grizzly bear attacking Leah. She wasn’t yelling for help but he unzipped the door on his tent while roaring and yelling “bear, bear”. As he crawled through the entrance Mr. Cole discharged his bear spray. Mrs. Cole followed him out of the tent while blowing her whistle to alert people and possibly frighten the bear.
The Coles could see the bear's dark outline on the opposite side of Leah’s tent and it was bouncing up and down on its front legs as if it were stomping on something. Mr. Cole continued to spray his bear spray while walking toward the bear. As soon as the bear locked eyes with Joe, it turned its head and walked away.

May 10th was a great day with wonderful weather. After spending the day together, the couple gathered more firewood and gazed at the stars, embracing their freedom. Around 1:30 AM Jami was overcome with sleepiness and decided to go to bed. She entered the motorhome and prepared herself for the night's rest. Ward was so comfortable in his favorite setting he decided the night was too perfect to waste inside of the motorhome and rolled out his bed next to the campfire. Lulled by the sounds of the forest, he had no reservations about closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep.
For Jami, the night was uneventful. She woke up and got ready to go outside where she assumed Ward would be waking up, if not stoking the fire back to life for the day.
She exited the motorhome and looked at the smoldering fire with Wards bedding somewhat scattered about. As she approached the firepit she could see a large blood trail leading off into the woods. Jami immediately began to be very concerned and started yelling for Ward. She screamed and yelled loudly for him but received no response. Jami then recruited the help of their dog and tried to get him to find Ward, but the dog was terrified and wouldn’t leave the motorhome.
Jami bravely followed the blood trail and found the body of Ward. The bear was nowhere to be found and she had no cell service. Jami rushed back to the couples car and at 9:30 AM began the drive to Danny Oconnor’s house, Wards father.
